Mary Webb School

Schools in the UK are obliged to comply with current building regulations and guidelines for ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality. In order to meet these new requirements, many schools have been implementing schedules of work to transform their existing buildings and achieve compliance. Mary Webb secondary school in Pontesbury approached local company, HTL Windows & Doors Ltd, to undertake their renovation project.

A tight schedule

When construction work of this scale needs to be carried out on a school premises, the work can only be completed during the school holidays when the children are not on site. To ensure they would be able to meet the tight project deadlines during the notoriously busy summer months, HTL turned to their trusted systems supplier, Kestrel Aluminium Systems.

The first phase of the project was to install a completely new front to the main school building, replacing the old windows with brand new thermally efficient windows and curtain walling. To enable rapid on-site installation and seamless logistics, the 100 mm curtain walling system in both the box and box and plate versions was utilised. The box system provided the strength to accommodate the height, while the box and plate system allowed HTL to transport the system with ease, with the sections ready to be fitted and fixed on site.

An ultra-modern campus

The 60 mm window system was integrated into the new façade to ensure sufficient ventilation into the classrooms, offices and the school hall, and to flood the spaces with natural light. As safety was a key factor in this project, all the windows were also fitted with restricted friction hinges. Together with the Kestrel non-thermal and PAS24 tested thermal commercial door systems, which are both also DDA compliant thanks to the double ramp threshold, this created a thermally efficient and highly secure lobby area as the central access point for the new, modern school campus.

Having visited the completed works, Sales Manager John Treagust commented: “Projects like this are a perfect fit for our customers. They can be confident that we will support them and they know that the robust systems we offer are ideal for application in school buildings.” We at Kestrel pride ourselves on our ability to collaborate with and support our customers to achieve the best possible outcome for the project.
