Ashlawn School

Phase two of a development plan to revitalise Ashlawn School in Rugby has just been completed, involving the extension of the Expressive Arts Centre. This has provided a brand new, state-of-the-art facility where students and teachers can collaborate on creative projects.

Tight timeframe

Tamworth-based fabricators Window and Door Maintenance Services were chosen to manufacture and install all of the required glazing. The project had tight deadlines and required everything to be on-site in full by the specified date in order to be ready for the next phase. Having partnered previously, Window and Door Maintenance opted to work with Kestrel Aluminium Systems, confident that they would be able to deliver the systems required in the desired timeframe.

A varied specification

To meet the brief, a wide range of Kestrel products were utilised, including both thermal and non-thermal ground floor treatment, commercial doors, and the 60 mm window suite. In total, 97 windows were manufactured, all specified to be top-hung using restricted hinges to comply with building safety regulations for schools and public buildings. Opting to use the complete 150 mm sill section, the windows sit neatly in the opening and have a uniform aesthetic using black accessories externally and silver internally.

Thermal efficiency and security were of paramount importance for this project. The Kestrel thermal framing and thermal commercial door systems fit the bill here, demonstrating very good U values and having been tested to the PAS24 security standard. This provided peace of mind for the school that all the entrances to the building are secure and energy efficient.

Successful delivery

Kestrel liaised closely with Window and Door Maintenance to ensure all of the material was received on-site at the same time. The colourful design chosen for the build meant there was the added pressure of providing green colour-coated profiles in a very short turnaround time. Nevertheless, Kestrel was up to the task and delivered everything as planned.

Kestrel Sales Manager, John Treagust, visited the school with Sean Anderson, Director of Window and Door Maintenance to see both phases of the project. “Until you are on site you can’t quite gauge just how big this project is going to be. Already having completed half of it, Window and Door Maintenance have made a significant contribution to the overall build, and whilst the choice of green as a window colour is unusual one, once it was on site and installed against the red panels and wood cladding it fitted in perfectly, creating a bright and modern building.”
