Scawby Brook

Tucked away on the outskirts of Brigg, Lincolnshire, Scawby Brook is a carbon neutral, sustainable house that has been constructed for modern living and sensitively integrated into the surrounding wooded setting. Designed by local architect, Kate Kelly, the dwelling’s connection with nature was a key focus of the client’s brief. Part of the house is elevated on stilts so that it sits high up in the tree line, with an architectural concept akin to a modern-day treehouse or bird hide.

Security meets efficiency

Local project manager, Mike Hill, was employed to deliver the project and source materials and labour from the local area. Mike specified Kestrel Aluminium window and door systems to provide a complete glazing solution for the project. The windows chosen for the building are a mixture of fixed and opening vents, with PAS24 compliant, multi-point espagnolette locking. Used in conjunction with double-glazed units that achieve a low U value of 1.2 W/m2K, they ensure the building is safe, secure and energy efficient.

Flooded with light

The bridge section of the house separating the living and sleeping quarters has been glazed with 2200 mm high units inset with top-hung casement windows to maximise light penetration and give stunning views of the surrounding woodland. The adjacent rooms have matching tall, fixed corner windows that are an impressive feature of the design and let light flood into the building from every direction.

All of the windows were powder coated in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) at Kestrel’s in-house powder coating facility. The finish provides an enhanced colour fastness and coating stability, prevents any risk of peeling, flaking, or fading, and ensures that the windows will retain an as-installed appearance for years to come.

A sustainable focus

The installation also boasts excellent sustainability credentials, which was another key requirement for the building. Kestrel aluminium windows are recyclable and have a low environmental impact throughout their entire lifecycle, making them the perfect choice for this project.

Tight timeframe

Kestrel worked closely with Fabrique Specialist Glazing Systems of Grimsby, who undertook the manufacture and installation of the systems, to ensure that the tight deadlines were met and the bespoke elements of the project were delivered as specified.
